3. Access data and server log files

Each time this website is accessed, the web server automatically collects information that is stored in so-called server log files. This may include in particular:

  • the anonymised or shortened IP address of the requesting device,
  • the date and time of access,
  • the page or file requested and the volume of data transferred,
  • the status of the request (HTTP status code),
  • the previously visited page (referrer),
  • the browser type, browser version and operating system used.

The legal basis is Art. 6 (1) (e) GDPR in conjunction with § 3 BbgDSG (performance of a task carried out in the public interest) and our legitimate interest in the technically error-free operation and security of the website. The data are used solely to ensure operation, for error analysis and to defend against attacks, and are deleted after a short period. The web server is operated at the University of Potsdam.

4. Cookies

For its basic technical operation, this website does not use cookies that allow you to be identified. Cookies are only used in connection with the web analysis described in section 5, and only after you have given your consent. Your consent decision itself is stored solely locally in your browser (local storage) so that the consent banner does not ask you again on every visit; this storage is technically necessary and is not transmitted to third parties. You can prevent cookies from being set at any time in your browser settings or delete cookies that have already been set.

5. Web analysis with Google Analytics

This website uses Google Analytics, a web analysis service provided by Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland (“Google”). Google Analytics uses cookies or comparable technologies that enable an analysis of the use of the website.

We have activated IP anonymisation (anonymize_ip). As a result, your IP address is truncated by Google within the member states of the European Union or in other contracting states of the Agreement on the European Economic Area prior to transmission. The truncated IP address transmitted by your browser as part of Google Analytics is not merged with other Google data. The analysis serves to evaluate the use of our scientific website and to improve it.

The legal basis for the use of Google Analytics is your consent pursuant to Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR and § 25 (1) TDDDG. Google Analytics is only loaded after you have explicitly agreed via the consent banner shown on your first visit. As long as you neither accept nor decline, no analytics cookies are set and no connection to Google servers is established. You may withdraw or change your consent at any time with effect for the future by clicking the “Cookie settings” link in the footer of every page.

You can prevent Google Analytics from collecting data by downloading and installing the browser add-on available at the following link: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. Further information on how Google handles user data can be found in Google’s privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy.
